The Project Campus of International Excellence “Smart Energy – Bio-energy & Smart Cities” is an integration project linked to the territory, surging from the aggregation of five universities(Universidad de Alcalá, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Universidad de Murcia, Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena and Universidad de Extremadura), two companies (Ferrovial y Repsol), two research centres( CIEMAT and IMDEA Energía) and one public corporate entity, the IDEA. Among its main features, we may highlight:
2 Thematic Foci: Bio-energy and Smart Infrastructures.
The focus on bio-energy addresses within the setting of this project, the exploration of biologic strategies for the obtaining energy products allowing maintaining economic development with zero or negative carbon footprint. In this context, very diverse alternatives are analyzed, ranging from the use of microorganisms to produce raw materials for fuels to the use of enzymes to generate energy products, or the production of energy crops with no impact of the food markets.
As a second area of actuation, rational use of energy is proposed, both in transportation and construction. The development of infrastructures optimizing energy consumption is crucial for savings in the resources.
2 Spanish innovative multinational companies: Repsol and Ferrovial.
The presence, from the very beginning of the project, of two leading Spanish multinational corporations, leaders in their respective fields (Repsol in energy and Ferrovial in smart infrastructures) gives the project its uniqueness required by the challenge.
4 Regional governments from which the Project unfolds its activity: the regional governments of the Comunidad de Madrid, Región de Murcia, Extremadura and Castilla –La Mancha.
The four Regions in which the project is initially located represent a good starting point from which to scale available
technologies to higher territorial areas.
5 public universities and 2 public research organisms: Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Universidad de Alcalá, Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, Universidad de Murcia, Universidad de Extremadura, Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas,
Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT) and Instituto Madrileño de Estudios Avanzados en Energía (IMDEA Energía).
The five participating universities and the two public research organisms contribute their capabilities in research and
teaching, as well as their own resources, thus facilitating the adequate start-up and development of the project.
7 differentiating elements of the Project:
- R + D Program in Bio-energy, impulsed by Repsol
- R + D Program in Smart Infrastructures, impulsed by Ferrovial
- Research School, integrating doctorate and post-graduate courses
- Continuous Professional Training Program
- Pilot Program of Sustainable City
- Business Incubator
- Agile and efficient Aggregation Governance
10 Partners with an Aggregation Agreement (already signed). The Project has started with the signature of an aggregation agreement signed by the ten participating partners URJC, UAH, UM, UPCT, UEX, CIEMAT, IMDEA Energía, REPSOL, FERROVIAL and IDAE.
