The Project Campus of International Excellence “Smart Energy” is born with the wish of two public universities - Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Universidad de Alcalá, and other universities that give support to the Campus, Universidad de Murcia, Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena and Universidad de Extremadura- to become one of the relevant actors in the European knowledge panorama and a reference in the areas of bio-energy and smart infrastructures. To achieve this goal, the project plans to capitalize on the large expertise offered by two Spanish multinational companies – REPSOL and FERROVIAL-, two public research centres - Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT) and Instituto Madrileño de Estudios Avanzados en Energía (IMDEA Energía)-, and the public corporate entity adscribed to the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, the Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT) y el Instituto Madrileño de Estudios Avanzados en Energía (IMDEA Energía).
Combining the teaching, research and corporate expertise offered by the partners, the transforming effect is multiplied. Teaching at the universities will be closer and of more quality, its real applicability to society will be larger, and employability and entrepreneurial spirit of students will increase. Research will be also brought closer to the market thanks to the corporate vehicles. The large international presence offered by the participating companies will allow in addition that knowledge transfer has a global effect.
With currently increasingly scarce resources due to increased demand by emerging countries and geopolitical tensions in the most sensitive areas of energy supply, generating real difficulties to European economies, efficient management of energy resources and secure supply are crucial. Europe and its universities can lead the process of change towards sustainable societies, allowing significant reduction of energy intensity and independence of supply thanks to clean and efficient energy sources.
